The English major (a sub-discipline of the First-level Discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures) was established in 2002 in Chongqing University of Technology and later developed into the Department of English affiliated with School of Foreign Languages. The Department of English, with the aid of modern language laboratories and internet technology, strives to cultivate high-quality and application-oriented talents equipped with an excellent command of English, profound humanistic knowledge, good translation and interpretation skills, aiming to achieve objectives of “consolidate students’ English foundation, enhance students’ humanistic qualities, improve students’ translation practical abilities”, and prepare them to launch career in technical translation on one hand, and “highlight major characteristics” on the other hand. Among devoted and knowledgeable faculty members of whom 42% are professors and associate professors, 92% of teachers hold master’s or doctoral degree, and 36% of them obtained doctorate. In recent years, teachers of the Department have been granted to a total of more than 20 research projects at municipal and national levels , and published more than 20 monographs, translation volumes, and papers in core periodicals. Students are encouraged to take part in various English contests and reaped rewards in translation contests at national level for several consecutive years. The Department has been focusing on the development of students’ comprehensive abilities, and actively exchanging with foreign universities and institutions. Graduates are welcomed and highly acclaimed by employers .
